Do Looks Matter More Than Ever? What This Tinder App Social Experiment Found Out

Online dating can be cumbersome to say the least. Sifting through hundreds of profiles, now in an era where “cat fishing” appears to be ever present can be literally paralyzing for some.

 Tack on a culture that fosters the maintenance of “the fountain of youth” and the presence of perfection and we need not wonder why dating has become increasingly difficult.

Recently there was a social experiment done by Simple Pickup using the Tinder app, that aimed to test the theory that;

1. Most women dating online are afraid they’re going to meet a serial killer

2. Most men dating online are terrified the women they meet are going to be fat.

The social experiment had two scenarios, both where a male and a female elicited dates via the Tinder app with appealing shots of themselves online. When their Tinder dates arrived in person for their date, they were faced with their male/female date disguised in a fat suit appearing much larger than they portrayed in their photos online. The experiment presented an inside look on the differences in the typical male Tinder Date and female Tinder Date reactions when someone lies about their profile photo.

The male Tinder Dates did not handle the situation well when faced with a now “overweight” female date, most left immediately. On the other side, the female Tinder Dates stayed with their “overweight” male date, making the most of their time together. Whether these men were extremely insulted by the act of lying about a profile picture or the fact that their date was overweight, could be under debate. Would these men have stayed if their date looked different but was not seemingly over weight?

The unfortunate truth behind online dating is that, you never really know what the person is going to look like until you meet them in person.

It’s imperative before you meet your date to be absolutely transparent about who you are and what you look like out of respect for that individual. Don’t waste their time. Also, be extremely clear about what you’re looking for in a partner. Where fitness may be on top of the list for some, it’s not for all.

The enormous amount of pressure these days to “get more matches” has appealed to people’s insecurities causing some to resort to photo shopping their photos or using out of date pictures of themselves. This only does you injustice when you do this. You’re not going to meet someone by leading with lies.

Embrace who you are and what you look like and you’ll find someone who will do the same.
